The Hindu epic Ramayana's fifth book is titled Sundarkanth, often known as Sunder Kand. Sundara Kanda was written by Valmiki, the first person to commit the Ramayana to writing, and is the first verse of the Ramayana to be composed in Sanskrit. Sundara Kanda is different from other parts of the Ramayana because Hanuman is the main character instead of Rama.

All of Hanuman's exploits are described in the Sundar Kand with great specificity and vividness. Hanuman turns himself into a huge form when he hears about Sita. He then makes a gigantic leap across the ocean to Lanka, where he saves Sita by defeating Surasa, the Mother of the Nagas, and Sinhika who is sent by Devtas.
