An Indian baby shower is traditionally held in the third trimester to celebrate the impending arrival of the new member of the family and to bless the expecting mother.

Godh bharai begins with the expectant mother dressed as a bride. They have her take a seat of prominence afterwards. The pregnant woman then extends her saree's draped "palls." Guests give the expecting mother a blessing and place their gifts in her "godh," or lap. This is where the name for this practice during pregnancy comes from.

During this time, the expectant mother is showered with gifts, there is much singing and dancing, games, and special foods are prepared to make her feel special.
