The Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is revered for its spiritual and historical significance. Described in ancient texts and praised by poet Kalidasa, the temple is believed to grant liberation (moksha) to its visitors. Originally destroyed by Iltutmish in 1235 CE, it was later restored by successive rulers, with significant contributions from the Marathas, including the reinstallation of the Jyotirlinga and the establishment of the Simhastha festival. The temple features a self-manifested (Swayambhu) Shivling, a grand structure, and a sacred water source, Kotitirtha. Modern developments include expanded gates, a large hall for devotees, and gold-plated spires.

महाकालेश्वर मंदिर, उज्जैन, मध्यप्रदेश में स्थित, भारत के बारह ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक है। यह स्वयंभू, भव्य, और दक्षिणमुखी शिवलिंग के लिए प्रसिद्ध है, जिसके दर्शन मात्र से मोक्ष की प्राप्ति मानी जाती है। 1235 ई. में इल्तुत्मिश द्वारा मंदिर ध्वस्त होने के बाद, मराठा शासकों ने 1728 ई. में इसका पुनर्निर्माण और ज्योतिर्लिंग की पुनर्प्रतिष्ठा की। सिंहस्थ पर्व स्नान की स्थापना और राजा भोज द्वारा मंदिर का विस्तार इसके गौरव को बढ़ाते हैं। मंदिर में कोटितीर्थ जलस्रोत, ओंकारेश्वर शिवलिंग, और विशाल सभा मंडप है। हाल ही में इसके 118 शिखरों पर 16 किलो सोने की परत चढ़ाई गई है।
